Last Week in AVP #13: Apple cuts 2024 & 2025 Vision Pro shipment forecasts? Apple Arcade Launches Five Fun AVP Title, AVP Head of Marketing Retires, and More!
Ming-Chi Kuo Reports - Apple cuts 2024 & 2025 Vision Pro shipment forecasts
The biggest news this week is AVP’s shipment projection. Ming-Chi Kuo is known for his supply chains sources but this one just doesn’t add up for me. See below for details.
My latest survey is as follows:
Apple has cut its 2024 Vision Pro shipments to 400–450k units (vs. market consensus of 700–800k units or more).
Apple cut orders before launching Vision Pro in non-US markets, which means that demand in the US market has fallen sharply beyond expectations, making Apple take a conservative view of demand in non-US markets.
Apple is reviewing and adjusting its head-mounted display (HMD) product roadmap, so there may be no new Vision Pro model in 2025 (the previous expectation was that there would be a new model in 2H25/4Q25). Apple now expects Vision Pro shipments to decline YoY in 2025.
No, Apple Didn't Dramatically Cut Vision Pro Production Due To Weak Demand (uploadvr)
For a more sane take on the situation, please read uploadvr’s analysis.
The Financial Times, The Information, and The Elec have previously reported that Vision Pro production is heavily constrained by the extremely limited supply of near-4K OLED microdisplays. All three sources reported that Sony, the supplier, can only produce enough microdisplays for less than 500K headsets in 2024. And Kuo himself agreed with this figure, saying in a September note that Vision Pro production in 2024 will be limited to "at most 400,000–600,000 units".
Given this, why is Kuo suddenly claiming the "market consensus" was 700-750K units? It simply doesn't make sense.
Remember that, the Apple blogosphere works by selling sensation (unlike this blog). So it’s important to read everything (especially rumours) with a grain of salt.

Apple’s head of marketing for its new headset, the Vision Pro, has retired from his role
Frank Casanova has worked at the Big Tech firm for 36 years, according to a Wednesday (April 24) Bloomberg report. Casanova left the company last week, Bloomberg said, citing an update on his LinkedIn page.
Casanova was involved in expanding the iPhone to new carriers, Bloomberg reported. In 2019, he became Apple’s first head of marketing for augmented reality. He was later tapped to lead marketing for the new headset.
