Last Week in AVP #4: Apple Vision Pro Glass Cracking, More Quest 3 Comparisons, AVP with Drone Flying, Piano Playing, Live Surgeries, and More!
Headlines
Possible defects in AVP cover glass
Reported by a few Reddit users (1, 2, 3, 4), their AVP units have shown signs of crack without accidental damage or drops. Whether this turns into a wide spread issue we will have to see. So far no signs of crack in my unit.
Zuckerberg’s campaign continues
Zuckerberg interviews with Morning Brew Daily podcast. Personally I think even disregarding the obvious flawed product comparisons, labelling customers of a competitor’s product as fanboy is just not a good look.
Verge’s take on Zuckerberg comments
If you are looking for a heavy dose of a bear’s case, then you will find this podcast enjoyable. Personally I disagree with 90% of the points made here but it is important to always hear arguments from both sides.
Discussions and Reviews
Balanced review from Uploadvr
A balanced and well informed review from David Heaney@Uploadvr. Lots of information here previously covered elsewhere but still an enjoyable read.
I have been a long time supporter for EyeSight, understanding that this is a hot take with the community but I am standing by it.
This is a rendering of where we want to get to. Not the removal of EyeSight. The follow excerpt from the review stood out to me (in agreement).
Some people have written off EyeSight as a failed project, and imagine it will go the way of the TouchBar in future iterations of Vision Pro, but I disagree with this level of pessimism. Again, it’s a good idea, it’s just a very early and limited implementation. Meta first showed off research on reverse passthrough back in 2019, and recently showed a render of what it could look like on a headset “possible to build now”. While renders obviously don’t fully represent reality, Meta researchers seem confident it’s possible to deliver much higher quality reverse passthrough than Vision Pro’s, and I’m sure Apple’s engineers are already hard at work on this too.
Killer app revisited
A great piece by Evan Armstrong@every.to. Him and I hold the same opinion that killer app is fundamentally a flawed view for general computing devices. I’ve covered this in my previous post.
Killer applications only make sense when a device is used for one thing, making it the wrong lens through which to view the two most important trends in tech today: generative AI and virtual reality.
Thorough comparison between AVP and Quest 3
A fair feature-by-feature comparison. It’s fun content to stay aware of products in the market but I can’t help but think most reviews are missing the point of AVP - it’s a platform designed with the end goal of meeting general computing needs. Meta has a complete different philosophy. It’s a bit like comparing car features between formula 1 car and a pickup truck.

A lot of the community seems to be sold on this. Trust me, this is a safety hazard and Apple is rightly so discouraging the use of this API.

I think the screens anchored to fingers is a bad idea. But better integration is desperately needed across devices. Huge miss by Apple.
