Tim Cook interviews with Wired on the Apple Vision Pro (source)
Letβs talk about your wearable display, the Vision Pro. Reports are that it hasnβt sold at the level that you folks expected. What happened?
Itβs an early adopter product, for people who want tomorrowβs technology today. Those people are buying it, and the ecosystem is flourishing. The ultimate test for us is the ecosystem. I donβt know if youβre using it very much, but Iβm on there all the time. I see new apps all the time.
I heard that Stevie Wonder had a demo of the Vision Pro and loved it. How did that work?
He's a friend of Apple and it's great to get feedback from Stevie. And of course his artistry is just unparalleled. One of the common threads running through Apple over time is that we don't bolt on accessibility at the end of the design process. It's embedded. So getting his feedback was key.
Meta and Snap are leading us to mixed-reality glasses that weβd wear continually. Is the bigger, heavier Vision Pro ultimately headed that way?
Yes, itβs a progression over time in terms of what happens with form factors. AR is a huge deal. With Vision Pro, weβve progressed to what is clearly the most advanced technology weβve ever done, and I think the most advanced technology in the world in terms of electronics problems. Weβll see where it goes.
Apple Vision Pro Could Soon Support PlayStation VR2's Controllers (source)
Apple and Sony are working to bring support for PlayStation VR2's controllers to Vision Pro, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports.
Gurman has a strong track record when it comes to reporting Apple's moves in advance, and he even revealed many details of Vision Pro itself before it was officially revealed or even acknowledged to exist by Apple.
Apple Vision Pro's gaze-and-pinch interaction system is ideal for interface interaction, and its hand tracking is suitable for casual gaming. But many VR and mixed reality games and interactive experiences on other platforms require physical controllers.
Apple Vision Pro has completely changed how Porsche unveils sports cars in two ways (9to5mac)
Taking advantage of state-of-the-art technology from Apple has recently extended to how Porsche holds its media events for the press. Just this summer, Porsche leveraged the power of Apple Vision Pro to take members of the press under the hood and inside the new 911 Carrera GTS in ways not possible before. Porsche even envisions using spatial Persona and SharePlay on Apple Vision Pro to hold immersive and intimate presentations for remote journalists.
Porsche details how Apple Vision Pro has already changed how it approaches unveiling a new sports car:
Groups of 15 at a time were invited to take a peek under the exterior as Porsche engineers explained the details of the new T-Hybrid system at the heart of the new model. The presenters and their media guests were able to do things that have never been possible with a traditional presentation, deconstructing the car down into its individual systems and components, lifting it up to see its underside and even spinning it around to see the aerodynamics at work β all in incredible detail thanks to Appleβs spatial computing technology.
Future Apple Vision Pro Could Have 5G Modem (source)
An upcoming version of the Apple Vision Pro headset could be equipped with a custom-designed Apple modem chip, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. In a report on Apple's plans for its in-house modem, Gurman said that Apple is "discussing" bringing cellular support to future Vision Pro models.
Notre Dame Cathedral reopens to the public on the AVP (source)
This weekend, #NotreDameCathedral is reopening to the public... and is coming on the Apple #VisionPro π To celebrate the cathedralβs rebirth, @targostories is releasing its immersive documentary 'Rebuilding Notre-Dame' on AVP.
Apple Vision Pro has now been on the market for ten months. While it was originally only sold in the US, since then it has expanded to Canada, the UK, Australia, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and China.
In Taiwan, Apple Vision Pro will start at NT$119,900. As with other regions, Taiwanese consumers will be able to try Vision Pro at Apple Stores, as well as get help finding the right fit of light seal and head strap, or buy online leveraging a face scan from an iPhone.
Apple is working on putting more sensors into Apple Vision Pro (source)
Just going through 2024's patents and patent applications, though, there can't be a type of sensor that Apple is not at least investigating. A newly-granted patent regarding a microphone on your nose is just the latest, although it appears to be the first time Apple has expressed interest in nasal passages.
"Method and apparatus for monitoring nasal breathing," describes a microphone being mounted on your nose. From the description, it could be like an extra extension, a face plate kind of thing, from some future Apple Vision Pro.
Or based on the patent's illustrations, it could just be taped to your face. And there is one description that makes this sensor sound like Nose Noise ID.
Disneyβs experience with VR and partnership with Apple make it possible to use Vision Pro to preserve Muppet Vision 3D (CNET)
No mixed reality headset has done this before, but CNETβs @BridgetCarey and @jetscott make the case why Disneyβs experience with VR and partnership with Apple make it possible to use Vision Pro to preserve Jim Hensonβs final project, Muppet Vision 3D.
I am absolutely STUNNED - I just got a glimpse into the future of watching TV together π€―
We currently have two Vision Pros in our household (temporarily, we are not that rich), and we decided to try watching a movie side by side with SharePlay.
What can I say? It actually worked. The sound and video on both headsets were perfectly in syncβ Like 100% in sync. Even the Personas sticked to the real person. It was absolutely mind-blowing how seamless it was and now I can't stop wondering if Apple already thought about this use-case.
